Disabled American Veterans reaffirm commitment

GREENVILLE — The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is a non-profit veterans support group founded in 1920. On a national level, the group plans and hosts a number of events throughout the year, and represents a continued commitment to helping veterans and their families.

The local Darke County chapter, Chapter 57, is no different in its quest to serve veterans and aid military families.

COVID-19 has had a severe impact on the group’s ability to serve the community this year, but in years past, members are always out and about in the Darke County community. In normal years, the group has participated in Memorial Day ceremonies, had the Forget-Me-Not drive in August, which supports their activities and donations, raised the flag at the opening ceremonies at the Great Darke County Fair, sponsored a DAV Mobile Service Office to help veterans with claims and appeals, and, in conjunction with the VFW and American Legion, performed Military Honor Guard ceremonies at funerals and other special events. This Veterans’ Day the group will honor their fallen comrades at the Darke County Court House on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

In the community, the DAV has sponsored flag etiquette classes, and donated flags to the schools. They also donated to the FISH Choice Food Pantry and purchased coupon books for patients at the Dayton VA. The group has also made significant donations to the Boy Scouts picnic table project at the VFW.

The current Commander of the 57th Chapter is Robert A. Foster, with Ivan Christian serving as Sr. Vice Commander, and Ken Wombold 1st Jr. Vice Commander. Other local officers include Don Dietrich as Adjutant and Treasurer, and Chris Rehmert as Judge Advocate. Rehmert also serves as a DAV representative on the Darke County Veterans’ Service Commission.

As of now, the 57th Chapter has 112 members with an average age of 75.7 years old. Even with their advanced age, the group still has 6 to 8 members who regularly attend meetings and serve the community. The group offers an open invitation to those who are not members and want to know if they are eligible for membership.

The 57th Chapter meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the VFW 7262 on 219 North Ohio Street in Greenville. This year, due to Election Day on Nov. 3, the next meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the group is encouraged to attend meetings. The Daily Advocate recognizes the DAV for their exemplary work in the Darke County community, and thanks all members of the DAV for their great sacrifice and commitment to making our home a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
