2 Versailles bowlers finish 2nd in WOHSBC singles tournament

MINSTER – A pair of Versailles bowlers finished as conference runner ups in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference singles tournament on Saturday at Community Lanes in Minster.

The singles tournament began with bowlers competing in two games to cut down the fields to 36 individuals for both boys and girls.

For the Versailles girls Maggie Hedrick bowled a two-game series of 252 to place 42nd, Larissa Jones rolled a two-game series of 231 to place 50th, Jena Mangen bowled a two-game series of 229 to place 52nd, Olivia Bruening bowled a two-game series of 227 to place 53rd, Natalie Parin rolled a two-game series of 217 to place 58th, Cassidy Riegle rolled a two-game series of 211 to place 61st, Haddi Treon bowled a two-game series of 186 to place 68th, and Jamee Brown bowled a two-game series of 168 to place 69th.

For the Versailles boys Aydan Moran rolled a two-game series of 292 to place 64th, Bradley Brandon rolled a two-game series of 260 to place 74th, Michael Hemmelgarn rolled a two-game series of 242 to place 79th, Quayd Pearson bowled a two-game series of 223 to place 83rd, and Bretten Cheadle rolled two-game series of 170 to place 85th.

For the Mississinawa Valley boys Dominic Rammel bowled a two-game series of 308 to place 56th.

After the cut, one more game was bowled with the top four in total pin count advancing to the semifinals.

For the Versailles girls Makenzie Berning bowled a three-game series of 495 to place 11th, Morgan Barlage rolled a three-game series of 441 to place 21st, Morgan Heitkamp rolled a three-game series of 420 to place 27th, and Brigette Holsapple bowled a three-game series of 397 to place 33rd.

For the Versailles boys Alex Groff rolled a three-game series of 589 to place 11th, Jacob Wenig bowled a three-game series of 587 to place 12th, and Brody Hyre rolled a three-game series of 518.

For the Mississinawa Valley boys Joe Teeter bowled a three-game series of 644 to place fifth.

For the Versailles girls Hannah Niekamp bowled a three-game series of 570 to qualify as the third individual in the semifinals while Kyle Cotner for the Versailles boys rolled a three-game series of 684 to qualify as the second individual in the semifinals.

Both Tiger bowlers won the semifinal matches with Niekamp defeating Wapakoneta’s Josee Kaeck 205-134 and Cotner defeating Wapak’s Blake Knueve 238-183 to advance to the championship matches.

In the finals Niekamp lost 187-183 to Wapak’s Britni Hoesterman and Cotner lost 235-195 to Wapak’s Brandon Kennard.

“Kyle came out strong at our season opener, averaging 223 for the tournament,” Versailles bowling coach Tyler Phlipot said. “I was proud of all of the boys and look forward to a strong season this year.

In regards to the girls, Phlipot added, “We had two freshmen that made the first cut in the tournament today. Hannah came out strong with an average of 191. I am proud of the girls and look forward to another strong season.”

The WOHSBC regular season will begin Saturday.

The Ansonia girls will play Van Wert at 9:45 a.m. at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta, and the Mississinawa Valley girls will play Celina at 9:45 a.m. at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta. The Versailles girls will play Wapakoneta at 9:45 a.m. at Community Lanes in Misnter.

The Ansonia boys will play Lima Senior at 1 p.m. at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta, and the Mississinawa Valley boys will play Temple Christian at 1 p.m. at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta. The Versailles boys will play Ottawa-Glandorf at 1 p.m. at Community Lanes in Minster.
