Horse pull returns to reunion

GREENVILLE — Chris Brewer, as well as fiancee Kendra Stollar and friends Jerry Marker and Marla Blume Werner are bringing the horse pull back to the Darke County Steam Threshers Reunion.

It will take place July 4 at York Woods at the southwest corner of the intersection of Reed Road/State Route 242 and U.S. 127, starting at 7 p.m.

This is the second time for the horse pull in recent years to be an added feature at the steam thresher show.

Brewer said he is expecting eight to 10 pair of horses to compete. Most will be Belgians and there could possibly be some Percherons or others there.

To compete, the horses have to pull 27 1/2 feet to qualify.

“We add 1,000 pounds each round,” Stollar said. “Then, they do it all over again. We keep adding 1,000 pounds at a time.”

Brewer, who has also organized some poker runs on horseback, said this is the second one he will be hosting at York Woods during the Steam Thresher Reunion.

And, it’s sure to draw a crowd.

He and Stollar are planning to wed Sept. 26. He works for the county highway garage and she works for Foureman’s Sand and Gravel.

They go to other horse pulls all over and have been to Michigan, Kentucky, Florida and Indiana.

“It’s a pastime and we enjoy that,” he said.

Admission is $5 with a weekend pass. Those 12 and under get in free.
