The Tour de Donut, a unique bicycle event, is coming to Arcanum on Sept. 12, where your ability to eat donuts is just as important as your ability to ride your bicycle. The event is a timed bicycle “race” where riders visit “donut stops” during the course and eat donuts.

For each donut the rider eats during the ride (and keeps down) they have five minutes deducted from their ride time. This is Ohio’s largest one day cycling event with 2,000 riders and 1,000 dozen donuts. There are all new courses for this year’s event.

The event is a mass start timed ride where riders visit donut stops and eat donuts. For each donut the rider eats during the ride (and keeps down) they have five minutes deducted from their ride time. There are prizes in several classes including the coveted golden Tour de Donut championship belt for the best adjusted “donut time.” They also award the most donuts eaten in several classes, and for the speed freaks we also award the fastest bike only time.

This ride is intended to be fun and include all cyclists pro to amateur, triathletes, tourist, fitness riders, fun riders, or you can dust off that two-wheeler you found along the road, or in the back of the barn you are not going to want to miss this event. While the event is technically a “race” few consider it a serious competition, remember this is all in fun! They doubt the next Tour de France champion will have Tour de Donut Champion listed on his palmares, so eat some donuts and ride as fast or slow as you wish. All roads are open to traffic, and all traffic rules must be followed. Roads are marked with large custom donut markings (in several colors and some have sprinkles) so you do not get lost.

New this year will be “The Glazer” – a donut stop within a mile of the finish line. Participants will have the option to eat one special donut for a 10 minute time deduction. They will have two donut options at The Glazer donut stop. Donut options and sources will be determined as we get closer.

Free Kid’s Events will start at 8 a.m. on George Street thanks to Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio in Greenville. Registration begins at 7 a.m. in the tent at the corner of George and Walnut; kids from 2 to 12 are welcome to participate. All roads are closed to traffic and all Kids must wear a helmet. They will have 25 new kids’ helmets to give away. The first 120 kids will receive a Tour de Donut T-shirt. All kids will receive a custom finisher’s medal and all the donuts and milk they care to eat.

The Mini Donut Race is a 15-mile mass start event with one Donut stop at Gordon United Methodist church. Mini The Tour de Donut riders will have a chance at The Glazer prior to the finish.

The Full Donut is a 32-mile mass start event with a Donut stop at the covered bridge at Lewisburg Community Park and at Gordon United Methodist church. Full Tour de Donut riders will have a chance at The Glazer prior to the finish.

The Double D Challenge is a 64-mile mass start event with a Donut stop at the covered bridge at Lewisburg Community Park, Gordon United Methodist church and Kennedy Winery. Full Tour de Donut riders will have a chance at The Glazer prior to the finish. Route is hilly in the last 15 miles with a Glazed category climb known as Hi-Wind.

At each Donut Stop your number will be marked for each donut you are given.

Growing from 106 participants in 2007, over 2,000 participants from 20 states and five countries come to Darke County to “compete.” There is no day of registration. Sponsors for this year’s event include Ulrich’s Hometown Bakery, Performance Bicycle, Boston Stoker, Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio, and the Arcanum A# Club Music Boosters.
