UNION CITY, Ind. — Carolyn Schultz of Union City participated in the Survivors of Unspeakable Loss (SOUL) Walk for the first time on Sept. 20 at Harter Park here.

She attended the event in memory of her husband, Roy, 83, who died July 31 this year after a prolonged illness.

“I didn’t walk, but my daughter Misty Price walked,” Schultz said. “My son, Todd, was here but he had to leave.”

And, she plans to keep returning each year for these walks.

“It was wonderful,” she said. “When they left the butterflies out, one landed on my finger. I’ll keep coming every year. He was failing in health the last couple of years. I really do feel like he was there [today].”

Another family member, Kimberly Carpenter, died Dec. 29, 2014, following an illness.

Her husband’s death also had an impact on a lot of people in the community, especially in their circle of friends at the Union City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7084 and the Union City American Legion Post 158.

A. U.S. veteran, he would have turned 84 on the day of the walk, having been born Sept. 20, 1931, in Darke County to the late Otho and Mable (Snyder) Schultz.

Carolyn Schultz participated for the first time in the SOUL Walk event at Harter Park, and plans to come back each year to honor her husband at the annual festivities. She especially enjoyed the butterfly release.
