GREENVILLE – Supporters and students of the Greenville City School District rallied Thursday night in preparation for the varsity football homecoming game Friday at 7 p.m. against the Piqua Indians.

The festivities began with a parade through town ending in the Greenville City Park where a pep rally was held and the crowning of the 2015 Chief Greenwave.

Senior and Greenwave Running Back Codi Byrd was crowned with the honor and greeted with cheers from the crowd.

Byrd is the son of Greg and Missy Byrd. His school activities include Varsity G, Science Club, and Supply Chain Management for two years. His interests include hanging out with his family and friends, playing video games (preferably of the sporting genre), fishing and camping.

He’s received awards including being named as 1st team GWOC North running back, 2nd team All Southwest District Division 3, 1st team all Darke County and 1st team All Division 2-3 (Dayton Daily News).

Byrd said he hopes to play college football while studying sports medicine.

Greenwave Head Football Coach Aaron Shaffer rallied the crowd prior to Byrd’s crowning.

“We need you in the stadium with us tomorrow – making noise – making it hard for those Indians…,” said Shaffer.

“I can tell you the 74 football players standing out here with you tonight, they’re going to put their heart into it. I know I do. I know the coaching staff does, but we need you, too. We need you to be loud not only when things are going good but sometimes we need you if things might go bad,” continued Shaffer.

The crowd met him with cheers.

“Everybody standing here meet us at the bell because we’re ringing it!” shouted Shaffer.

Shaffer was the homecoming parade’s grand marshal.
