Versailles places 8th at OHSAA state girls golf meet

COLUMBUS – The Versailles girls golf team finished eighth at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II state tournament, which is the best finish in program and Midwest Athletic Conference girls golf history.

Versailles shot a 386 on Friday and a 376 on Saturday at The Ohio State University Gray Course in Columbus for a two-day total of 762 and an eighth-place finish. The eighth-place finish tops the Lady Tigers’ ninth-place finish in 2013 as best in conference and program history.

Cortland Lakeview won the Division II state championship by shooting a 346 on day one and a 348 on day two for a total of 694. Rocky River Lutheran West finished second with a 696, Dayton Chaminade Julienne finished third with a 698, Sugarcreek Garaway finished fourth with a 709, Milan Edison finished fifth with a 719, Columbiana finished sixth with a 724, and Huron finished seventh with a 730.

Following Versailles, Kettering Archbishop Alter finished ninth with a 770, Milford Center Fairbanks finished 10th with a 777, Bellevue finished 11th with a 792, and Waterford finished 12th with an 815.

Sophomore Jorja Pothast led Versailles at the state tournament as she finished 35th overall with a two-day total of 185. She shot a 93 for Friday’s 18-hole round and a 92 for Saturday’s 18-hole round.

Senior Maddie Covault and sophomore Lauren Durham both shot a 191 for the two-day tournament to tie for 42nd place. Covault shot a 94 on day one and a 97 on day two while Durham shot a 101 on day one and a 90 on day two.

Junior Lauren Heitkamp shot a 197 to finish in 49th place. She shot a 98 on Friday and a 99 on Saturday.

Freshman Morgan Heitkamp finished in 55th place as she shot a 203 for the two-day tournament. She finished with a 106 on day one and a 97 on day two.

Shelby junior Alexis Jones won the Division II state tournament, which included 72 golfers, by shooting a 152. She shot a 78 on Friday and a 74 on Saturday.
