GREENVILLE TWP — In the midst of a number of uncontested races in Darke County, the winner of one race is still to be determined.

Based on early results, Matt Kolb is the presumptive winner of a closely contested race for a seat on the Greenville Township Board of Trustees Tuesday night.

As of Wednesday morning, Kolb was leading with 1,603 votes, edging out Jeremy Edger (1,594 votes) and Geoff Surber (1,529 votes).

However, the vote count remains unofficial, according to Darke County Board of Elections Director Becky Martin, who said elections workers were sorting through approximately 300 provisional ballots cast county wide, ballots which will take time to certify.

“We have 91 provisional ballots for Greenville Township alone,” said Martin. “There could be a significant change in totals for the candidates.”

A total of 4,729 votes were cast in the race. If the vote remains close after the provisional ballots are certified — within one-half of 1 percent — or about 24 votes, there will be an automatic recount.

Greenville Township is located in the middle of Darke County and encompasses the City of Greenville. Township trustees are elected to four-year terms. Three members serve on the board, with one elected in the November prior to the U.S. presidential election, and two elected in the year following.

Kolb, Edger and Surber were seeking to fill the seat being vacated by longtime trustee Bill Kelly.

The two current trustees are Justin Hines and Ron Klosterman.
