Versailles girls swim team filled with experience

VERSAILLES – The 18 girls on the Versailles High School girls swim team are looking to continue the success that they had last year.

Heather Albers, Ashlyn Cordonnier, Lexi Fliehman, Abbey Marshal and Rachel Subler competed in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state swim meet last year and are motivated to return to the state competition.

The four seniors on the girls team this year are Ashlyn Cordonnier, Lexi Fliehman, Abbey Marshal and Rachel Subler.

Cordonnier competed at the state meet in the 200 medley relay, which placed 15th, and the 200 free relay, which placed 11th last year. At the district meet last year, Cordonnier placed 19th in the 200 individual medley and 16th in the 100 breaststroke in her individual events. She will swim freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and 200 individual medley this year.

Fliehman competed at the state meet in four events last year and placed fifth in the 50 free, 12th in the 100 free and was on the 200 medley relay, which placed 15th, and 200 free relay, which placed 11th. At the district meet last year, Fliehman placed third in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free in her individual events. She will be one of our freestyle sprinters but also will swim the 200 free along with backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. Fliehman has committed to swim for Miami University in Oxford next year.

Marshal competed at the state meet in the 200 medley relay, which placed 15th, and 200 free relay, which placed 11th last year. At the district meet last year, Marshal placed 18th in the 200 individual medley and 18th in the 100 butterfly in her individual events. She will swim the 200 individual medley, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle.

Subler competed last year at the state meet in the 200 free relay, which placed 11th. At the district meet last year, Subler placed 15th in the 50 free and 26th in the 100 backstroke in her individual events. She will swim backstroke, freestyle, 200 individual medley and some butterfly.

Juniors include Heather Albers, Lauren Heitkamp, Emily Kramer and McKinzie Kruckeberg. Albers competed at the state meet last year in the 200 medley relay, which placed 15th. At the district meet last year, she placed 21st in the 50 free and 22nd in the 100 breaststroke. She will swim breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle this year. Heitkamp improved tremendously and dropped some time in her events last year. She will swim some freestyle sprints, freestyle distance events, backstroke, breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Kramer placed 33rd in the 200 freestyle at the district meet last year. She has been swimming during the offseason and is motivated to improve her times. She will swim some freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Kruckeberg is looking to drop some time this year in all of her events. She will swim some freestyle and breaststroke.

Sophomores include Payton Berger, Kari Mangen and Faith Wilker. Berger dropped a lot of time in her all of her events last year. She once again is looking strong in the breaststroke and freestyle events. Mangen has improved tremendously from last season. She will focus on the freestyle and backstroke events this year. At the district meet last year, Wilker placed 33rd in the 100 butterfly. She will swim freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and the individual medley this year.

There are also seven freshmen who are new to high school swimming. The freshmen are Tori Ahrens, Courtney Batten, Taylor Cordonnier, Chloe Francis, Grace Francis, Morgan Frederick and Claire Keiser. Most of the freshmen have some prior swimming experience. Versailles will experiment with the freshmen throughout the season. Ahrens is looking strong in freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke. Batten is looking strong in backstroke, freestyle and the individual medley. Cordonnier is looking strong in breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle. Chloe Francis is looking strong in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Grace Francis is looking strong in freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Frederick is looking strong in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Keiser is looking strong in backstroke and freestyle. Versailles also is looking for some of the new swimmers to swim some distance freestyle events this year.

Last year, the Versailles girls swim team won the Celina Sprint Meet, Trotwood Greenon Invitational, Vandalia Butler Invitational, Lima Holiday Invitational, Coldwater Cavalier Invitational (the unofficial Midwest Athletic Conference meet) and were sectional champs. The Lady Tigers placed eighth in the district meet and they placed 15th in the OHSAA state swim meet last year. The girls are extremely motivated to do well this year.
