Arcanum News: Christmas festivities in December

0

The Pitsburg Church of the Brethren will present their annual Christmas Concert at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6. This year’s program will include special solos by several local artists as well as congregational participation in singing some of the all-time favorite traditional Christmas hymns. The prelude, performed by pianist Norma Baker and organist Lois Stickley, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the concert are designated as a benefit for the Jason Daugherty Family. Jason, an employee of the Village of Arcanum, has been off work since suffering a medical issue earlier this year. The proceeds from this concert will go to help Jason and his young family. The community is encouraged to come and listen to the Christmas story in song, while helping the Daugherty family. There will be refreshments served in the fellowship hall immediately following the concert. The public is invited to come and share in the ‘kick-off’ of our Christmas season. The church is located at the west edge of Pitsburg at 8376 Pitsburg-Laura Road. For additional info, contact Bruce Shank at 564-2891.

It’s a girl for Nathan and Jennifer Greve! Audrina Rosalee Greve was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Nov. 10 at 4:53 p.m. weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and measuring 21 inches long. Proud grandparents are Greg and Terri Greve of Arcanum and Matt and Rosemary Pollock of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Great-grandparents are William Potter Sr. of Kettering, Martha Greve of Greensburg, Indiana, Randall Sr. and Mary Yager Kouts, Indiana, and Thomas and Betty Jo Pollock of Silvercreek, New York. Congratulations to local Pastor Greg and his wife, Terri, on their second granddaughter this year!

From 8 to 11 a.m. a Santa Breakfast will be held at the Arcanum High School cafetorium; tickets are $5 at the door. During the month of December, the Winter Lights in Ivester Park will occur every Saturday and Sunday evening through Dec. 20. There is a walking route on Saturday nights only. The Arcanum Fire Department is sponsoring a bonfire with S’mores every Saturday night next the Boy Scout House where Santa will welcome the children. On Dec. 12, the Village Singers will be caroling in the enclosed picnic shelter from 7 to 8 p.m. Another highlight will be the tree of lights courtesy of the Lions Club and the village utility department. A manger nativity scene will be near the gazebo for the duration of the event. On Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, the Santa House uptown on Troutwine’s car lot will be open for visits from all the little ones!

A bit of town trivia about our public library that you may or may not know…Did you know that the Arcanum Public Library was originally built in 1874 by George Ivester as a residence for his family? Today the library celebrates 52 years at this location, having moved into this beautiful home in 1963. Throughout the years, the library board has made many renovations and additions, well-maintained and cared for the property into the impressive building we visit today. Did you know that there certain areas remain decorated and arranged in the same manner as when it was a private residence for viewing by visitors?

Tomorrow is the deadline for reservations for the Senior Citizens Luncheon at Arcanum-Butler Local Schools. This free lunch will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the cafetorium. Please RSVP by calling 692-5174 Ext. 1337 by Dec. 1.

Arcanum-Butler Local Schools and the Alumni Association will begin honoring our Distinguished Alumni and Honorary Trojans to recognize and honor those individuals who have made a significant impact through achievements, actions and contributions within their communities and professions and serve as exemplary role models for Arcanum students. The first Alumni Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at the Arcanum Alumni Homecoming set for April 16, 2016.
