GREENVILLE — A New Madison man was sentenced for his part in the theft of more than $12,000 in Darke County Common Pleas Court Monday.

David W. Light, 33, of New Madison, was indicted on charges of complicity to commit burglary and complicity to grand theft. Light entered a plea of guilty on the complicity to burglary charge and the second charge was dismissed.

On the morning of the sentencing, the prosecution added another charge – forgery, so sentencing was delayed while a plea arrangement was made combining the two cases.

Light was ordered to pay restitution of $12,405 to Carl Wade in the burglary case. An additional $2,000 restitution was ordered in the forgery case to be paid to Mandy Jones.

Though Light was given 60 months to repay the debt, he pledged in court that the restitution would be repaid within six months.

Light had only one misdemeanor bad check offense in his criminal history according to his presentence investigation. His attorney, Andrew Pratt, said Light had problems with handling money and had sought to resolve his problem by taking what belonged to other people rather than asking for help.

Hein told Light that his presentence investigation said he was a low risk to reoffend, but “that’s an act of will on a daily basis,” adding, “People at high risk don’t have to and people at low risk can.”

Light told the court, “I’m sorry for what I did, and you’ll never see me here (in court) again.” Wade was present in the courtroom and said that he accepted his apology.

Hein ordered Light complete a budget management course, in addition to any recommended program by the probation department while he is on community control for 60 months. Light also got 30 days of jail time with work release and must complete 100 hours of community service.
