TROY – Three Versailles wrestlers – Tanner Bey, Corey Dieringer and Kyle Gigandet – qualified for the Division III state tournament on Saturday.
The trio of Tigers finished in the top four of their weight classes in the district tournament at Troy’s Hobart Arena to earn spots at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament.
Dieringer was Versailles’ top finisher, finishing as the runner up in the 160 pound class. He started out with a 12-3 major decision victory against Bethel-Tate’s Jordan Newberry, beat Coldwater’s Grant Kaiser 10-8 and then beat Columbus Academy’s Calvin Wuorinen 5-4 to secure a spot at state. In the championship round Mechanicsburg’s Kaleb Romero pinned Dieringer in in 1:08.
Gigandet finished third in the 195 pound class. He started out by pinning Allen East’s Logan Emerick in 5:07 and then pinned Deer Park’s Jeremy Heglin, also in 5:07. After losing a 14-6 major decision to Patrick Henry’s Kent Petersen, Gigandet rebounded to defeat Troy Christian’s Levi Sims 4-2 and then beat Bethel-Tate’s Jeffrey Botts 4-3 in the third place match.
Tanner Bey started out the district tournament with a 19-3 technical fall win against Mount Gilead’s Brandon Strickland and a 15-0 technical fall win against Allen East’s Lee Dues but then lost 6-1 to Dayton Christian’s Henry Danishek. Tanner Bey beat Wayne Trace’s Chase Marroquin 12-9 to secure a spot at state before losing the third place match 9-3 to Covington’s Ryan Ford.
Six other Versailles wrestlers competed at the district tournament but didn’t qualify for state. They all won at least one match at the district tournament.
Preston Platfoot started out with a 4-3 win against Deer Park’s Jesse Potts and a 6-2 win against Amanda-Clearcreek’s Jacob Parsley in the 120 pound class. Platfoot lost a 15-1 major decision to Lima Central Catholic’s Hunter Lucas and lost a 10-2 major decision to Wayne Trace’s Ruger Goeltzenleuchter. He finished up with a 1-0 win against Ridgedale’s Kalib Patterson in the fifth place match.
Jonny Moorman pinned East Knox’s Blake Moreland in 4:50 in the first round of the 170 pound class. After losing 7-5 to Williamsburg’s Dawson Davis, Moorman pinned Amanda-Clearcreek’s Dylan Warga in 4:01 and won a 10-2 major decision against Ottawa-Glandorf’s Tyler Ebbeskotte. He lost a 3-2 decision to Brookville’s Austin Delk but then beat Mechanicsburg’s Dustin Knapp 2-1 in the fifth place match.
Jacob Rismiller began the 220 pound class with a 9-8 win against Amanda-Clearcreek’s Austin Smith. He then lost by a 16-0 technical fall to Carlisle’s Reece Human and was pinned by South Charleston Southeastern’s Gunnar Gearhart in 2:56.
Bo Bey began with an 18-2 technical fall victory against Twin Valley South’s Skyler Straszheim in the 182 pound class. He then lost a 13-2 major decision to North Union’s Corbin Bunsold and lost a 3-2 decision to Columbus Academy’s Josh Pearson.
Jacob Poling started out with a 14-12 win against North Union’s Tarren Riffle in the 106 pound class. Poling then was pinned by Dayton Christian’s Ronnie Pietro in 1:33 and lost 6-4 to Greeneview’s Devan Hendrix.
Steven Mangen lost by an 18-3 technical fall to Wayne Trace’s George Clemens in the first round of the 126 pound class. Mangen pinned North Union’s Noah Maynard in 3:57 but lost 10-3 to Lima Central Catholic’s Joey Caprella.
Tanner Bey, Dieringer and Gigandet now will compete in the OHSAA state tournament. The tournament will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ohio State’s Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
