GREENVILLE — Maggie Hamm has been postmaster in Greenville since March 5 and is excited to be here.
Now living in Dayton, she plans to relocate in Darke County soon.
Hamm has been in the postal industry for a little more than 20 years, starting out as a clerk at a post office in Dayton.
“I went into management after three years and worked all over the Dayton area as a supervisor and worked my way up,” she said. “I became acting manager 12 years ago.”
Hamm said she was postmaster in Covington for two years, until they moved the carriers to Piqua and down-sized that office. So, she subsequently went back to Dayton for four years.
“I absorbed another zip code at the 45410 office to Forest Park at Northridge,” she said. “It was a great office, but there was no rural area there. It was time to move on and I was ready to come back out to a rural area. I am really excited to be in Greenville. It’s the perfect size city.”
Not only is she looking forward to living and working here and having her family spend time here, she wants to get involved.
“I can’t wait for the Great Darke County Fair,” said Hamm, who is single with three grown sons and a granddaughter. “I like swimming, kayaking, bicycling and planting flowers in my garden.”
Hamm said she also spends a lot of her time working and is dedicated to the job.
“I have a great group of dedicated employees,” she said. “This is a premier post office. It’s focused on customer service. We take in bulk mailing at the window process passports. We have decorative items, the old standard priority mail boxes free and gifts cards and greeting cards. It’s like a one-stop shop. I’m focused on providing excellent customer service and so are my employees. And, we talk to customers every day about customer service and making them happy.”
She added, “My job is exciting and interesting. The essential part of infrastructure of a county is communication.”
She’s loving what she is seeing in the Treaty City.
“Greenville has a ton of potential for growth and activities,” she said. “I’m looking forward to spending a good long time as postmaster here.”
The postmaster said there are 34 employees, including herself, working out of the Greenville Post Office.
“Our phone number is 548-1310 and our hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. We also have a post office box in the lobby 24 hours,” she added.
Hamm grew up in Dayton in Vandalia Butler Township North and graduated from Vandalia Butler High School.
Her parents are Kay and Dick Ward, who still live in Butler Township.
“Mom is 84 and Dad is 91 and in good health,” said Hamm, who also has a sister and three brothers.
She said her whole family is happy for her and her career.
