Arcanum baseball team splits doubleheader at Fort Recovery

FORT RECOVERY – The Arcanum baseball team opened the 2016 season on Saturday splitting a doubleheader against Fort Recovery.

Fort Recovery won the first game 8-1. The Indians scored one run in the bottom of the first, one in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth while Arcanum scored its lone run in the seventh.

Arcanum had two hits and four errors in the season opener while Fort Recovery had eight hits and two errors.

Maverick Hildebrand went 1-for-3 with a double for Arcanum. Conner Pohl was 1-for-2, and Hunter Saunders drove in a run.

Cole Burrell took the loss for Arcanum as he pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs and two unearned runs on five hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Arcanum bounced back to win the second game 6-3. The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and the Indians scored a run in the third inning to cut into the lead. Arcanum added four runs in the seventh while Fort Recovery scored two.

Both Arcanum and Fort Recovery had three hits in the second game. Arcanum committed two errors while Fort Recovery had four.

Nathan Kubik earned the win for Arcanum by pitching five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Pohl earned the save, allowing two earned runs on one hit, three walks and six strikeouts in two innings on the mound.

Pohl led the offense as he went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Saunders was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Cody Meeks also went 1-for-3, and Burrell drove in a run.

Arcanum and Fort Recovery are both now 1-1 on the season. The Trojans will have their home opener on Monday when they play host to Versailles.
