Greenville baseball team defeats Marion Local for its 1st win of the season

MARIA STEIN – Greenville earned its first victory of the season on Monday, defeating Marion Local 8-1.

“We did excellent tonight,” Greenville baseball coach Eric Blumenstock said. “Kyle Mills threw probably one of the best pitched games we’ve had so far this year … we’ve only had three but our pitching has been outstanding all three of our games so far. But what hadn’t shown up until today was the bats. We came out with double-digit hits tonight and did a lot of things really well. Played good defense. Got a couple kids out there that hadn’t had a lot of varsity playing time yet but we needed them. Kyle leaves short stop we’ve got to fill in and Aaron Rich did a heck of a job out there defensively for us today (at second base).”

Greenville racked up 11 hits in Monday’s game and took advantage of seven errors by Marion Local. The Green Wave only committed one error and limited the Flyers to four hits.

Greenville got to Marion Local early in the game, mounting a two-out rally in the top half of the first inning to go up 3-0.

After back-to-back strikeouts by Marion pitcher Jared Bergman, Mills started Greenville’s rally by reaching on an error. After Logan Eldridge also reached on an error, Tanner Ross doubled to score both runners and put the Wave up 2-0.

Jason Shields reached on Marion Local’s third error of the inning, and then Brandon Beyke singled to score Ross and make it 3-0.

“A lot of our hits were two-out hits, two-strike hits,” Blumenstock said. “A lot of stuff we’ve really been preaching we need to work on, getting those clutch hits, making teams pay with two outs. That’s a heart-breaker for a team when they get two outs and then a team scores three runs on them. That was some big stuff for us tonight, and I’m feeling pretty good about where we’re starting to progress.”

Marion Local scored its lone run of the game in the first inning. Duane Leugers started the inning with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice grounder by Trent Bohman.

After Cole Griesdorn reached on Greenville’s lone error of the game, Matt Kahlig doubled to score Leugers and cut Greenville’s lead to 3-1.

In the second inning Greenville continued to take advantage of Marion Local miscues.

Greenville got runners on the corners as Brayden York led off with a walk and then Grant Minnich reached on an error. As Minnich stole second Marion Local threw the ball into center field, allowing York to score and Minnich to advance to third. Jacob Hounshell then reached on an error, which allowed Minnich to score and make it 5-1.

Marion caught Hounshell stealing but then committed another error to allow Mills to reach base. After he took second on a wild pitch, Eldridge got an infield single to put runners on the corners.

Eldridge then successfully stole second, but Marion Local caught Mills off base at third for the second out of the inning.

The Green Wave added another run, though, when Shields singled in Eldridge to make it a 6-1 game.

Greenville added to its lead in the fourth. Mills led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a single by Ross and scored on a single by Beyke, making it 7-1.

The Wave added their final run in the sixth inning. Eldridge started off the inning with a leadoff walk, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a sacrifice grounder to make it 8-1.

Marion Local, meanwhile, couldn’t manage any runs after the first inning. Mills pitched six innings of one-run baseball, and Beyke pitched a scoreless seventh to finish off the game.

Greenville improved to 1-2 with Monday’s victory. The Green Wave are off until Friday when they play host to another Midwest Athletic Conference team, Fort Recovery.
