ANSONIA – The Ansonia softball team beat St. Henry 6-2 as the Tigers celebrated senior night on Wednesday.
After a 1-2-3 top half of the first, Ansonia got its offense going in the bottom half of the inning. Leadoff hitter Taylor Thwaits singled and then stole second. After Taylor Thwaits moved to third on a sacrifice grounder by Brooke Neal, Molly Walters drove her in with a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead.
St. Henry’s Makenzie Brookhart and Brooke Borgerding led off the second inning with back-to-back singles to right field. After stealing third, Brookhart scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Borgerding then scored on a two-out RBI single by Elise Kunkler to give St. Henry a 2-1 lead.
Ansonia tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Shelby Hartzell drew a one-out walk to start things off. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Hartzell scored on a RBI single by Katelynn Overholser.
After a scoreless third inning, Ansonia retook the lead in the fourth. Trinity Henderson got a one-out walk, and Overholser singled just past the short stop. Henderson then scored the go-ahead run when St. Henry committed an error on a ball put in place by Taylor Thwaits.
Following a scoreless fifth Ansonia added to its lead in the sixth with a two-out rally. Molly Walters drove in Taylor Thwaits to increase the Tiger lead to 4-2. After an Abby Helmke single, Jailyn Thwaits hit a double into left field to make it 6-2.
“This game was a nice win for the seniors,” Ansonia coach Floyd Jenkins said. “We need to keep working on our offense, but it’s getting better. We have a couple of days to improve now. We had a good defense, a great pitcher, and it was just a good day for our seniors.”
