Sweet and Sassy: It’s Mother’s Day

0

I’m sure my siblings will agree we have a wonderful mother. She was a strong person, a great teacher, inspirational and a hard worker, and she was a great cook and seamstress in her day.

We were blessed with both our parents, who are still with us today. I’m so glad they met more than 70 years ago at the Darke County Fair or we obviously wouldn’t be here.

Mom always had good advice and lots of wisdom. I attribute that to our Grandma Riffell being a German Baptist and raising her children in that environment and surely passing on her religious beliefs to them, even though none of them became German Baptists themselves. Grandma let them have their choice in that matter.

Mom is the only one left and the youngest of the nine children born to Emery Calvin and Mary Catherine (Stoner) Riffell. She was 14 months old when Grandpa died.

Our mother stayed home with us four children while Dad worked, except for the time he broke his arm falling off a horse he was riding {too fast in wet weather} and was forced to be off work. She worked that Christmas season at G.C. Murphy’s, a downtown Greenville department store at that time.

Then, after younger sister Brenda was higher up in school, she went to work for Aunt D’Arleen Waymire in her floral business in Ansonia.

She really seemed to enjoy that. And, yes, Mom is so creative that she even helped with some handiwork around the house to the point of building things.

When looking up some quotes on Google to use for this column, I found a couple that I liked.

They are: “You might think I never hear what you say, Mom, but the trick is: I live by your words everyday,” and “Mother is she who can takes the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.”

Mom loved all of us unconditionally, and that love was passed on to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and now great-great-grandchildren.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom, and to all you other mothers, mothers-to-be, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and great-great-grandmothers.
