VERSAILLES – An 8-3 win against New Bremen on Tuesday gave the Versailles baseball team a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference championship.
New Bremen struck first with two runs in the top half of the third inning before Versailles took a lead it held the rest of the game with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Cardinals made it a one-run game with a run in the fourth. The Tigers then added three insurance runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to win by four runs.
New Bremen out-hit Versailles seven to six in the game. Both teams committed one error.
Jared Niekamp went 1-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs for Versailles. Collin Peters was 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and one run. Austin Knapke went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.
Kyle Subler was 1-for-2 with two walks and a RBI. Brett McEldowney and Kurtis Rutschilling both were 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Cole Niekamp walked three times, scored a run and drove in a run. Adam Lyons walked twice, drove in a run and scored a run.
Cole Niekamp earned the win as he pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, no walks, one hit batter and eight strikeouts. Keaton McEldowney pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit, no walks and one strikeout.
Versailles improved to 15-4 overall and 8-1 in the MAC with the victory. The Tigers share the MAC championship with Coldwater, who beat St. Henry on Tuesday to claim a piece of the league title.
