Wave of love headed to Flint thanks to VBS attendees

ANSONIA — “Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love” is the theme last week’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Ansonia United Methodist Church, and not only did the youth attending the event have fun learning about the Bible, performing to energizing music and playing games, they learned to give.

And how appropriate that their mission this year focused on the Flint, Michigan, Water Project. There have been toxic water issues in Flint with a lead poisoning crisis caused by corroded pipes. Water is reportedly unsafe to drink.

So this year’s Bible school students were asked to bring a monetary donation or some bottled water to VBS for the cause.

“Vacation Bible School always has a mission program,” said Pastor Ron Hoeksema. “This idea for the mission came from someone in the church. We want to raise as much money as we can to buy shrink-wrapped water and take it to Flint.”

Already by Thursday of last week, they collected 40-some cases of water and $165.47 in monetary donations.

“Our goal was $150,” Hoeksema said. “We were told by someone if we hit our goal, they would match the $150, so we will have that, too.”

They are still accepting donations of bottles or water. A pick-up trailer will be in front of the church at West High and Pearl streets for those from the community who want to donate on Sunday, June 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Those having questions may contact the pastor at 269-589-9634.

“We will take monetary or water donations any time; just call,” Hoeksema said. “One hundred percent of the donations will go to Flint. We [church members] will use our money to make the delivery in a rental truck. We’d like to fill that rental truck if we can.”

VBS started Monday and ended Friday at the church. They averaged 50 students a day.
