GREENVILLE – Arcanum’s Steven Vanatta shot a 90 in Tuesday’s Ohio High School Athletic Association boys golf sectional tournament at Turtle Creek Golf Course to qualify for the district tournament.

The Arcanum senior was the lone Darke County golfer to advance out of the Division III Turtle Creek sectional, which included golfers from Ansonia, Arcanum, Bradford, Mississinawa Valley and Tri-Village.

Vanatta shot a 43 on the front nine and a 47 on the back nine for his 18-hole round of 90, finishing tied for ninth overall. He qualified for districts as an individual along with Bethel senior Tyler Weinert, who shot an 81; Covington junior Andrew Slusher, who shot an 85; and Emmanuel Christian junior Nick Kittles, who shot an 88.

As a team Arcanum finished just one stroke out of district-qualifying position. The Trojans shot a 388 while Tri-County North shot a 387 to earn the fourth and final spot at districts. Catholic Central won the sectional tournament with a 347, Newton was the runner up with a 363 and National Trail finished third with a 384 to earn district-qualifying spots along with Tri-County North.

Arcanum finished fifth with its 388, Emmanuel Christian was sixth with a 403, Tri-Village finished seventh with a 412, Bethel was eighth with a 415, Troy Christian finished ninth with a 429, Covington was 10th with a 463, and Mississinawa Valley was 11th with a 506. Ansonia and Bradford didn’t record team scores as they didn’t have enough golfers record scores.

Vanatta led Arcanum with his round of 90. Also for the Trojans, Carter Gray shot a 98, Cameron Reed shot a 99, Cade Brubaker shot a 101, and Cameron Warner shot a 109.

Luke Wheeler led Tri-Village with an 18-hole round of 94. Also for the Patriots, Gage Hileman shot a 100, Dillon McCullough shot a 108, Corbin Holzapfel shot a 110, and Derek Eyer shot a 116.

Kyler Guillozet led Mississinawa Valley with a round of 123. Also for the Blackhawks, Mason Hummel shot a 126, Mason Hiestand shot a 128, Jake Connor shot a 129, and Ethan Dirksen shot a 129.

Alex Swabb led Bradford with a 93. Also for the Railroaders, Isaiah Painter shot a 108 and Hayden Dickerson shot a 123 while Brayden Sanders and Eric Sanders were disqualified.

Trevor Martin led Ansonia with a round of 148. The Tigers’ Brandan Heck, Conner Lee, Trevor Martin and Kaya Price were disqualified.

Vanatta now advances to the OHSAA Division III district boys golf tournament on Oct. 6 at Beavercreek Golf Club. Two teams and two individuals from the district tournament will qualify for the state tournament.
