Versailles girls golf team qualifies for OHSAA state tournament

MIAMISBURG – The Versailles girls golf team earned a trip back to the state tournament on Wednesday by winning the Division II district tournament at PipeStone Golf Course.

The Versailles girls shot a 366 during the district tournament and won the team championship by seven strokes over Carroll and Chaminade Julienne, both of whom had 373 team scores. By virtue of their top three finishes, Versailles, Carroll and Chaminade Julienne each earned spots in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament.

The Arcanum girls concluded their season at the district tournament, finishing ninth out of 12 teams. The Lady Trojans shot a season-best score of 406 at districts.

Madi O’Daniel led Arcanum girls by finishing 18th overall with an 18-hole round of 92. Also for the Lady Trojans, Franchesca Hackworth finished 37th with a 101, Brenna Loxley finished 47th with a 104, Lexi Unger finished 60th with a 109, and Alex Less finished 71st with a 142.

Lauren Heitkamp led the Versailles girls with a round of 86, tying for 10th place overall. Also for the Lady Tigers, Lauren Durham finished 18th with a 92, Jorja Pothast finished 23rd with a 93, Morgan Heitkamp finished 28th with a 95, and Anna Groff finished 56th with a 108.

Eaton’s Sarah Willis shot a 74 and finished first among the 72 golfers in the district tournament. She qualified for state as an individual along with National Trail’s Makenna Jones and Sammi Blackburn, who both shot a 77 and tied for second overall.

Versailles and the other state qualifiers will compete in the OHSAA Division II state tournament on Oct. 14 and 15 at The Ohio State University Gray Course in Columbus.

For the Versailles girls this will be their fourth trip to the state tournament in the past five years. Last year the Lady Tigers finished eighth at the state tournament, which was the best finish in program history. Durham, Lauren Heitkamp, Morgan Heitkamp and Pothast all competed in the 2015 state tournament.
