Strong start leads Franklin Monroe girls basketball team past Troy Christian

TROY – Franklin Monroe started off strong and then held off a second half comeback attempt to defeat the Troy Christian girls basketball team 32-29 on Monday night.

Franklin Monroe scored the first points of the game, which was back and forth in the opening minutes. Midway through the first quarter the Jets went up by four, eventually leading by seven points, 12-5, at the end of the first quarter. Belle Cable and Corina Conley scored four points each to lead FM in the opening period.

The Jets extended their lead to 10 points midway through the second quarter and went up by 15 with 49 seconds to play in the half, going into the halftime break up 23-8. Conley led FM with seven points in the quarter, during which the Jets outscored the Eagles 11-3.

Troy Christian came out of the halftime break strong and cut Franklin Monroe’s lead to eight points. The Eagles outscored the Jets 10-4 in the period, reducing the FM lead to 27-18 by the end of the quarter. Conley again led the Jets in scoring during the third period with three points.

Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter Troy Christian had further cut its deficit to five points. However, the Eagles then started having missing baskets and turning over the ball to slow down their comeback attempt.

With 3:24 to play Troy Christian had its deficit down to three points, but Audrey Cable increased FM’s lead to five again with two points.

Troy Christian connected on a pair of late free throws to make a three-point game once again, and with 14 seconds remaining the Eagles had one final chance at a game-tying 3-pointer. They couldn’t make it, though, preserving Franklin Monroe’s 32-29 victory. Audrey Cable led Franklin Monroe with three points in the fourth quarter.

For the game Conley led FM with a game-high 16 points. Also for the Jets, Audrey Cable scored 4 points, Belle Cable with 4, Kinsey Goins scored 4 and Kennedy Morris scored 4.

For Troy Christian Kinley Blake had 6 points, Lauryn Lavy scored 6, Sarah Earhart scored 5, Katharine Lee scored 5, Hailey Peters scored 4 and Jalyn Farrer scored 3.
