Check out the latest designated historic site of the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society — The old Arcanum School, dated 1876, is located at 110 East South Street in Arcanum. The school closed with the opening of the “new” school on North Main and sold in 1925. It has been a variety of businesses in the past as well as apartments in the upstairs. The complete history is in the Arcanum, Ohio Arcanum Business History book by Anita Short. Today it is owned by Jordan Turner and is The Cabinet Merchant. It is also the third location on our self-guided driving tour of old school houses brochure.
There are new guidelines for donations to AWTHS: Accepted items are those that pertain to southern Darke County history, items that they can accommodate and items that they currently do not have a copy of or already have. The General Rule is to call or contact one of the following AWTHS volunteers: Annette Stewart, Carolyn Furlong, or Fred Troutwine first before leaving items on the front or back porch or without an acquisition card. Check their website first to see if they already have reference library items such as books, yearbooks, etc. This will help their storage room issues as well as avoiding duplicates. The AWTHS thanks everyone for their cooperation and donations.
Were you in school when Arcanum had a guy cheerleader? Do you remember when OHSAA banned building stunts such as the pyramid? Do you remember a time before half time show routines? When did cheerleading competitions begin? Show your school spirit, wear your school colors, and join our guests when they share their stories, laughter and memories. The AWTHS wants to help preserve these memories. If you have pictures, uniforms or other artifacts please bring them with you to share at the next Coffee and Conversation on July 8 at 10 a.m. Also, they would like to scan your photos for their files on that day. The Pitsburg Church of the Brethren will host the Faithful Sons at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2017. The Faithful Sons have been sharing the Gospel of Christ through Southern Gospel Music for many years. John Short sings the lead part for the group. He lives in Union City, OH, and is mostly retired. John has sung with several groups over the years, including the Promised Heirs and the Chordsmen, before starting The Faithful Sons. Kim Gilbert sings the baritone part, and has been with the group from the beginning. He has also sung with a barbershop quartet through the years. Kim lives in Greenville, and is also recently retired from Flagg Lumber in New Madison. Singing tenor is the newest member of the group, Kent Waller. Kent also makes his home in Greenville, and works for Crown Equipment in New Bremen as a Packaging Engineer. Before joining The Faithful Sons, Kent sang baritone with The Dayton Ambassadors for three years until the group disbanded in 2012. This group has but one goal, lift up the name of Jesus Christ in
word and song, and lead others to a loving, personal relationship with Him. Come and worship with them and you will surely be blessed. The church is located at the west edge of Pitsburg at 8376 Pitsburg-Laura Road. The public is invited to this gospel concert and a freewill offering will be accepted. Arcanum Family Movie Night is coming on Saturday, July 15th, beginning at 5 p.m. with food from local vendors such as: Nacho Pig, Tennessie’s Phillipine Cuisine and Creme de la Creme Cakery and possibly more. Plans are still in the making with other activities to be announced as soon as they are finalized. The movie will be shown around 9 p.m. in the Ben Franklin parking lot, so don’t forget your blankets and/or chairs! Voting is open to choose the movie – Moana, Disney’s The BFG (Big Friendly Giant), Finding Dory, tHe Secret Life of Pets, and the Jungle Book. Vacation Bible School at Immanuel Baptist Church starts today June 26 through Friday June 30th from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 500 West South Street, Arcanum. Children aged 3 years through 6th grade are invited to come and be “Submerged – Finding Truth Below the Surface”. Prepare to embark on an adventure like no other, scouring the mysterious fathoms of the deep sea. Thrilling discoveries await just beyond the portholes of your submarine. Things look very different once you get below the surface – and that’s true for life above the surface, too. As kids submerge themselves in God’s Word, they will discover that Jesus saw people differently. He didn’t just see what’s on the outside; He saw who people were on the inside. The theme is based on the scripture Psalms 139:23-24.
