Summer has officially arrived. The longest day has just passed and now sunlight is moving in the other direction. Time for the community to celebrate the Fourth of July. The town will have lots of eating for the holiday.
Start the day with the pancake breakfast at the United Methodist Church. You can have all of the pancakes and sausage you want to enjoy. Serving begins at 7 a.m. for early risers. However if you want to sleep a bit later, serving continues through 10 a.m. There is juice and coffee! All proceeds help with the church’s mission work. Adults pay $7, children over 12 pay $4 and little tykes under age six can enjoy a free breakfast.
No need to leave the village for this Independence day celebration. Good food, a parade at 3 p.m. and the traditional fireworks at 10 p.m.
A special event is planned for 2 p.m. when a Lincoln Historic Marker is dedicated at the library to include the village as part of the funeral train journey. The public is invited to attend. It will be in front of the library with the Kiwanis in charge of the event.
Also remember the book sale at the library and get your summer reading at a very big bargain!
This is also the kick off of Camp Growth. Kids can meet with parents behind the church on July 2 for the fun of pony rides, face painting, a bounce house and more. Children sign up to join in learning and fun for the month of July. Children from kindergarten through grade six will be able to share in remedial work, academic skills, community involvement and fun! It is the perfect time to reignite the learning process and have summer fun, too. It is a three day a week program, meeting on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Contact Stephanie Baumgardner at 937-459-2616. Mark your calendar teens! The New Madison Public Library is planning an event for you. Volunteering for a Better World is part of the summer reading program and has scheduled a 3 p.m., July 7 date for your get together. This is for age 12 and up. Brenda Miller, director, will guide you through a service project.
This week’s congratulations: The Chancellor’s List was announced at Indiana University East. Students make this list with a 4.0 GPA with a minimum 12 hours of academic work. Elizabeth Miller and Heather Ferris are on that list!
