Greenville volleyball team sweeps West Carrollton

GREENVILLE – Greenville recorded its third win in the past five matches on Saturday with a 25-17, 25-7, 25-14 sweep of West Carrollton.

Greenville, which posted wins against Fairborn, Mississinawa Valley and West Carrollton in the past two weeks, improved to 7-12 overall and 4-10 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference with Saturday’s victory. West Carrollton fell to 5-15 overall and 3-9 in the league.

“We’ve won a couple of good games recently, and I think that’s really helped build team morale,” Greenville volleyball coach Chelsea Dowd said. “We come into games and we feel confident about them, which is good for us. That lacks a little bit at the beginning of the season because we play some really, really good GWOC teams. But we’ve gotten a lot better. You can see that now.”

The match against West Carrollton began with the two teams playing close with seven ties in the opening set. The final tie of the game came at 14-14 after which Greenville scored 11 of the next 14 points to win the set 25-17.

Greenville dominated the second set. The Lady Wave began the game on a 7-0 run and went on to easily win 25-7 to go up two games to none.

West Carrollton rebounded in the third set and kept the score much closer. Greenville held a slim 15-13 advantage before scoring 10 of the final 11 points to win 25-14 and complete the sweep.

“We started off a little bit slow in that first set, but at the end we started to pick it up,” Dowd said. “Second set was great. Third set was great. They did a really nice job. They did a really good job. They did the basic stuff the way that it needed to be done, and that led to a good win.”

Entering the final week of the regular season, Dowd is hoping the Lady Wave can continue to build on their momentum in preparation for the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament.

“We won a really good five-set match on Monday against Mississinawa, which was a great builder for confidence because as we go into tournament we’re going to play games that have the potential to go into four or five sets,” Dowd said. “So, yeah, building the confidence right now two weeks out from tournament, that’s clutch.”
