BROOKVILLE – Arcanum played hard on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as Anna swept the Lady Trojans in an Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional tournament volleyball match.
Arcanum, the sixth seeded team in the Division III Brookville sectional, lost 25-15, 25-17, 25-17 to third-seeded Anna to end its season.
“They worked their butts off, and I’m proud of them,” Arcanum volleyball coach Macey O’Dell said of her team’s play against Anna.
Anna never trailed in either of the first two sets, and the only tie in their game was at 1-1 in the opener.
Arcanum was able to take early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the third set, but then Anna took control on its way to a third consecutive victory.
Audrey Heiser and Camille Pohl led Arcanum with 10 kills each in the match. Jenna Haney had three blocks while Trinity Layman and Elle Siculan both had one.
Macey Hartman led the Trojans with 12 digs, and Pohl and Siculan added 10 each. Siculan had a team-high 20 assists, and Haney had an ace.
With Saturday’s loss Arcanum finished the season with an 18-6 record. Five of the Trojans’ six losses this season came to teams who finished ranked in the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association state polls – Fort Recovery, Miami East and three losses to Franklin Monroe.
“We had a really good season,” O’Dell said. “We were 18-6. I told them that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Super proud of them. We played our hearts out all year.”
Saturday’s loss also marked the end of the high school volleyball careers of four Arcanum seniors: Ashlynn Farmer, Sydney Naylor, Elle Siculan and Madi Wilson.
“Elle, my senior setter, she ran a 5-1 for me this year,” O’Dell said. “So that’s definitely going to be a loss. All the other girls definitely sad to lose them as well.”
