Versailles News: Holiday bottleneck

0

This is the time of year when all the holidays hit us one after another, but seemingly occur simultaneously. Last weekend was exciting and crazy with the High School Girls Volleyball team going to the state championship after beating a team that never lost all season on Thursday evening.

Friday morning the Versailles Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day program with local veterans from Versailles and North Star. The patriotic program honored all five branches of the military. Friday evening the town held their “Hometown Christmas Celebration” with sleigh rides and Santa Claus. Perhaps Santa should have added some blue to his traditional outfit since he chose Veterans Day to come to town. The town was decked out with Christmas lights on the trees lining the streets and the street lamps were adorned with Christmas banners and the Flags of the United States of America.

The Versailles Vets Club served their annual bean soup dinner Saturday evening to a lighter than normal crowd, since a large portion of the town was, rightfully, cheering the Girls Volleyball team towards their Division 3 State Championship. This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, then there’s Black Friday the biggest shopping day of the year and the official kick-off to the Christmas shopping season.

As they say, it’s good to be busy and the town of Versailles certainly has been that. I hear a common concern that Versailles needs a community calendar. This comment usually comes from organizations and clubs that schedule a fundraiser or event only to discover that some other club chose the same date. It happens all the time, but is it really a surprise? There’s only 365 days in a calendar year. Undoubtedly there is going to be concurrency!

I believe the offices of the Village of Versailles would post events on their local cable channel for those clubs that would like a community calendar, but that does not guarantee only one event per day. Organizations in Versailles are extremely active and would do well to lean on business basics such as knowing your target market. After all different age groups have different focuses, or simply, different strokes for different folks. What is the supply and demand of your product and what are your sales strategies to promote your event or product?

No one can do it all and no one can have it all, but we can make wise choices capable of making and giving us what is in our best interest, which just might include emotional health.
