State of the Heart Care Joins Global #GivingTuesday movement

GREENVILLE — According to State of the Heart Care Business Development Assistant Sara Joseph, in Greenville, many people are unaware of State of the Heart’s Community Care Program.

As a result, State of the Heart Care has joined #GivingTuesday. The kick-off is today, and is held annually the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, to kick off the holiday giving season. 92Y, a cultural center in New York City, conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a global way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. All donations State of the Heart Care receives from the #GivingTuesday drive will go directly to its Charity Care Program, Joseph said.

Joseph said the Charity Care Program is important to State of the Heart, as it helps eliminates the fear of hospice.

“Cost is a huge fear,” she said. “We want people to know there is still a way. We can work with you and help you, and the cost should be the least of your worries. State of the Heart has no monetary goals set up, but any little bit helps. Anything makes a difference.”

The Charity Care Program is set up for patients that either cannot afford hospice care, or that are without insurance coverage for hospice care, Joseph said. One recipient who recently passed away, was visiting his family and fell ill during his stay.

“His insurance did not cover the care, but State of the Heart was able to pay,” she said. “He was able to die peacefully with all of his wishes in tact, and he was surrounded by his family, which was the most important for him. It is really important to us that everybody gets that end-of-life journey that we all deserve; not just people who can afford it or whose insurance luckily covers it. That fund is there, to reiterate what our mission is: to ‘Care without Limits’.”

According to State of the Heart, each day of hospice costs about $175, which covers the medications, supplies and care.

“Everyone’s needs are different,” Joseph said. “We are asking for people to please help in meeting them.”

State of the Heart Care decided to join the movement as a way to introduce the online giving tool “Giving Fuel”, which makes it easy for donors to contribute to the non-profit organization via phone, computer, or tablet, Joseph said.

“State of the Heart Care is so excited to join this movement,” she said. “We have so many wonderful donors every year, but most of our donations come through the mail. We are using Giving Tuesday as a way to show donors how easy it is to donate via the internet. This is our first live fundraiser, and I’m really looking forward to being able to see the donations come through in real time. I encourage anyone to donate anything big or small. My five-year-old has already pledged a dollar to the cause, and that dollar means more to our organization than he could ever know.”
