Arcanum News: Happy Veterans Day

0

In the United States, Veterans Day is usually observed on Nov. 11. However, since it occurs on a Sunday this year, then the following Monday is designated as the official holiday. Originally called Armistice Day, it was initially celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919, on the first anniversary of the war. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day. And unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans – living or dead – but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Today at Arcanum High School there will be a Veterans Day Assembly from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Local veterans are encouraged to attend and to sit in the front seats by the podium. This year’s speaker will be 2002 AHS graduate Lt. Luke Marshall. Luke was born in Dayton, but moved to Arcanum in his youth and was very active in the community. He is currently stationed at the Naval Reserve Officer Training Command at The Ohio State University as an assistant professor of naval science, teaching navigation and naval operations to midshipmen.

Don’t forget to support the Darke County Pregnancy Help Center by attending an excellent concert. This Saturday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. The Collingsworth Family will perform in Concert at the Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall, 215 W. Fourth St. in Greenville. Come and enjoy an evening as this exceptional family shares their musical talent as witness for Christ. Proceeds for this event will go to the Darke County Pregnancy Help Center, Inc.; general admission tickets are still available at $20 each by calling 937-423-4836. In the past this event has been heavily supported by the churches in southern Darke County and organizers wish to thank all those who have attended in the past. Arcanum resident Lois Monroe was the former director of the DCPHC in Greenville and continues to support the organization and its beliefs of the sanctity of life and the promotion of family life. The DCPHC is a local non-profit located at 105 W. Third St. in Greenville. If you are interested in learning more about the center you can reach them via email at [email protected] or their website: http://www.dcphc.org/
