GREENVILLE – Thanks to St. John Lutheran Church, the Grace Resurrection Community Center (GRCC) has been using its new double wall oven for the free lunches, which are provided four days a week.
The church donated $2,000 to the meals program, which feeds 35 to 50 people during the days the soup kitchen is open.
Darlene Huffman, who is coordinator of the soup kitchen, said those who come for the meal don’t only do it for the food but for the company and socialization.
It was Bonnie Tryon, one of the members of St. John Lutheran, who noticed there was one spot in the kitchen with no oven, and decided it should be replaced.
The church members had their new oven in use on Monday.
“We’re using all four ovens today,” Tryon said.
Huffman said 22 churches in the area alternate in preparing and serving the meals. And Monday it just happened to be St. John Lutheran’s turn.
“The churches who are take part provide and pay for the food, make the meal and serve it,” Huffman said. “They plan their own menus because they provide the food.”
Huffman said the clothing bank at GRCC is open one day a week with clothing with sizes from babies to juniors, ladies, and men.
“People can come in twice a month and get clothing,” she said. “There are forms to fill out. We had 84 at the clothing bank last week. Thursdays are real busy here when the clothing bank is open.”
Huffman also reported the food pantry at GRCC is open Monday and Thursday nights.
“We have meat, non-perishable foods, produce and bread in the food pantry, which clients can get twice a month,” explained Huffman, who comes to the soup kitchen every morning to make sure the churches involved have everything they need. “I bag the groceries. We pay for the food from Shared Harvest.”
According to Huffman, everything at GRCC is made possible by donations.
“The postmen donate to us from their food drive, as do Boy Scouts and churches, who have food drives,” Huffman said.
Money also comes to the soup kitchen via Community Unity and the bell ringing event at Christmas time as well as from individuals and churches.
