Registration for Summer Reading at the Arcanum Public Library is open. The program runs from June 7 to July 31. Pick up a calendar of events and reading log when you register. Register before June 19 for a chance to win 4 tickets to Kings Island.

START TIME CORRECTION: The Upcoming Outdoor Concert, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Veteran’s Park next to the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical House — Medieval to Modern: Influences to American Music. Local resident and AWTHS member Mike Wells will be on stage discussing some of the songs and writers that helped to impact today’s diverse music styles and will be selecting a few examples of these influences to sing. As a young child, Mike was fascinated by the music ministry of his uncle, so his parents bought him a toy guitar at the age of five. By high school, Mike was playing music in a dance band on weekends with regional success in the Dayton area. While serving in the military, he had the opportunity to meet and play with musicians from all over and played in clubs in the Philippines in his spare time. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the concert.

The Arcanum Village Pool will open on June 5. The pool is located at 1 Pool Drive just adjacent to Ivester Park. Hours of operations from June 5 to July 3 will be 12 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. In the event of inclement weather, the pool may close early, open late or remain closed if temperatures remain below 70° (discretion of pool manager/village administrator). Please note that 15-minute breaks will be held 15 minutes before each hour. All swimmers are required to be out of the water at the final whistle of the day and exit the pool grounds promptly at closing.

Season pass sales, pool party rentals, and swim lesson registrations will be held at the Village Administration Office, 309 S. Albright Street from May 3 to June 4. After June 4, please register at the Community Pool. Questions may be directed to the Village Administration Office at 937-692-8500 through June 4. After June 4, please call the Community Pool at 937-692-8230.

Swim Lessons will be offered during two sessions: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 7 to 8 p.m. Session 1: June 22, 24, 29 and July 1, 6; and Session 2: July 20, 22, 27, 29 and Aug. 3. Note: Class sizes are limited. The Ladies Water Aerobic Classes will begin on June 14 and be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Cost is $45 for the summer session or an Adult Membership pass.

Are you registered for the Trojan Golf Scramble 2021 on June 27? The event will be at Beechwood Golf Course with check-in at 11:30 a.m., and a Shotgun start at 1 p.m. There will be a meal provided, door prizes, hole competitions, and a 50/50 raffle. Cost is $50 per player/$200 per foursome. Come support the Arcanum High School golf teams and enjoy the day. The Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society’s First Saturdays Open House will return on June 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The Farmer’s Market is now called the “Veteran’s Park Market” for the summer, it is not sponsored by the AWTHS anymore. I understand that there is space available for vendors to set up each week on Saturdays.

The Twin Township Trustees will be hosting an Ithaca Cemetery Workday on June 12 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. A rain date is scheduled if needed on the following Saturday. The township will supply water, D2 solution and soap. Those interested in helping should bring a bucket and a soft-bristle brush. This is a great volunteer opportunity for groups such as Scout Troops and others needing volunteer hours. Please RSVP to [email protected] or by text 937-423-1085.

Plans are in the works for the 2nd annual 4th of July Old Time Picnic and Children’s Parade in Ivester Park organized and sponsored by the Arcanum Preservation Society. It will be here before you know it. Mark your calendar and plan to join in this free community event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tributes online continue to pour in for Mark York, AHS grad, who was best known for his role as Billy Merchant in The Office. Mark was the son of local resident Becky York. Mark was also survived by his father Glenn York, and brothers Brian, Jeff, and David. He also had many aunts, uncles, and cousins here in Darke County. My condolences and sympathy to the family, I remember Mark as a little boy in Sunday School at Ithaca United Methodist Church and he had such a sweet spirit. May you rest in peace, Mark!
