GREENVILLE — Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at the DeColores Montessori School experienced their annual overnight field trip as a capstone to their science education for the school year.
The students first travelled to the Columbus Zoo for a “safari” at The Wilds. With its 9,000 acres, the zoo is home to many rare and endangered species from around the globe living in open-range habitats. Students encountered numerous unique animals, such as a camel reaching into their shuttle, and learned about the importance of animal and habitat care, as well as conservation efforts, both at the zoo and around the world.
Next, students visited the Logan Conference Center in Logan, Ohio, a 700-acre campsite in south central Ohio, where they hiked, had a picnic, and stayed overnight. In the morning, students visited the Old Man’s Cave State Park, one of the seven major hiking trails within Hocking Hills State Park. The Old Man’s Cave park offers a one-way, mile long loop trail with striking views. Afterward, while at the park, they participated in science activities, and ate lunch, and continued hiking.
The annual overnight field trip for the fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at DeColores Montessori is one of the highlights of the school year for all, emphasizing the Montessori pedagogy of learning through intrinsic motivation.
