DARKE COUNTY — Here are the scores and stats from the high school softball games from April 18.

Ansonia 9 (7-4, 3-1) vs Mississinawa Valley 0 (4-5, 3-3)

ANSONIA — The Lady Tigers broke the game open in the third inning to grab a conference win over their rivals at home.

Ansonia head coach David Fisherback said once the team started to hit to make contact and not try to kill the ball, they started to put runs on the board.

“I call them seeing eye dog hits. Just put the bat on the ball, good things happen. They find holes. That’s what we started doing. Then, we took advantage of our speed,” Fisherback said.

Both teams had chances in the first three and a half innings to do some damage. Mississinawa Valley had runners in scoring position twice, but couldn’t come through with a hit to drive them in.

Senior Bailey Schmit drove in Ansonia’s first run on a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. Then with two outs, the Lady Tigers scored four more runs. Freshman Addison Geyer and senior Abby Kramer both drove in a run in the inning.

The Lady Blackhawks tried to respond with a two out rally. They had two runners on and put a ball in play that would have loaded the bases. After being close once before in the game, sophomore Miley Walls through out the runner at first from right field to end the inning.

Then Ansonia scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Geyer drove in another run while two more came to score off errors.

Mississinawa Valley head coach Max Guillozet said even with the injuries they are dealing with, they have to play some better defense behind their freshman pitcher, Ella Godfrey.

Godfrey played well, but everyone needed to step up in this game.

“She’s only going to get better as time goes on. We got to make plays on defense too. We had a lot of silly errors. A lot of silly errors. But, we’re down to nine players right now,” Guillozet said.

Sophomore Ava Thatcher drove in a run for Ansonia in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 9-0.

All game long, Mississinawa Valley couldn’t get the bats going or put pressure on Ansonia. They were limited to one hit in the game.

Guillozet said Kramer did a great job keeping them off balanced and didn’t let the top three hitters in the Mississinawa Valley lineup do their job and get the lineup hitting at the plate.

Fisherback said Kramer did a great job mixing her pitches. After a brief break due to wet conditions the last few weeks, Kramer and the team are starting to round into midseason form.

“She’s starting to get into midseason form. With this weather, I thought we were there about 10 days ago. Then we didn’t play for three days. Then all of a sudden, the game I didn’t think we would played at Minster, next thing we know we’re playing,” Fisherback said.

Kramer pitched all seven innings and had 10 strikeouts while allowing one hit. While a little hurt and refusing to leave the mound, Godfrey pitched all six innings and had nine strikeouts.

Guillozet said he can sense Godfrey is getting a little worn out and the injuries haven’t allowed her to get some rest. The team also lost their fourth hole hitter in freshman Gentry Newbauer for a little while.

The team is getting some much needed time off and will be back out on the diamond on April 22 at Tri-County North at 5 p.m. They will then host Bradford on April 23 at 5 p.m.

“We have a lot of injuries right now. We’re going to take the next four days off. They have prom on Friday and we got nothing this weekend. I told them to get some rest. Be ready for Tri-County North on Monday,” Guillozet said.

After three games over the weekend, Ansonia will be at Marion Local on April 22, at Preble Shawnee on April 23 and at Dixie on April 24 all starting at 5 p.m.
