UC scholarships reach nearly $1 million

UNION CITY, Ind. – Union City Junior Senior High School held its Commencement Saturday afternoon, June 1, in the high school gymnasium. The class of 2019 graduated 68 students.

Scholarships, grants, military education benefits, etc. amounted to a total of $947,068 to further the education of the applicable graduates. This included $148,524 from 95 local scholarships. The following graduates received scholarships at the Senior Reception on Thursday, May 30.

Courtney Whitesel is the valedictorian of Union City High School Class of 2019. She received the Perry Valedictorian Award, Class of 1983, Zelma Bailey Memorial, Steve Hinshaw Humanitarian Award, Edith Winn and Gloria Godfrey-Larry Wasson scholarships. She plans to attend Ball State University and major in Math.

Madison Fischer is the salutatorian of Union City High School Class of 2019. She received the Alumni-In Memory of Bertie Teegarden, St. Vincent Randolph Hospital Auxiliary, John D. Wilson and Clyde & Sarah Alice Wise Scholarships. She plans to attend Indiana University East and major in nursing.

Emalee Bocanegra received the Lady Indian Basketball, Class of 1983, Alumni-In Honor of Coach Harry Allison and the Adelsperger Family Endowment Scholarships. She will be attending the University of Cincinnati.

Emma Brewer received the Gertrude Brady Memorial, Lawrence Family, Gene & Roberta Bennett, Dellarose Sickels, John D. Wilson and Randolph Eastern Classroom Teachers Association Memorial Scholarships. She plans to attend Ball State University.

Success Brodie received the Lady Indian Basketball, Bill & Mary Lou Fulk Memorial and the John D. Wilson scholarships. She will be attending Indiana State.

Mya Carpenter received the Lady Indian Basketball Scholarship. She will be attending Sinclair Community College.

Maria Casillas-Romero received the National Honor Society-Member, Alumni, Chet Mock Memorial, Wanda Mann, and the John D. Wilson Scholarships. She plans to attend Ball State University.

Acacia Clemons received the Lady Indian Basketball, Mark Welch Memorial and FFA Alumni Scholarships. She will be attending Indiana State University.

Megan Clemons received the PTO and John D. Wilson Scholarships. She plans to attend Ball State University.

Joshua Crawford received the Class of 1983 and John & Prudie Schmidt Broadcasting Award Scholarships. He will be attending Indiana State University.

Abigail Crowder received the Tony Puccini Memorial, Norman “Red” Young Memorial, Alumni and Delta Theta Tau-Myrtle M. Adelsperger Memorial Scholarships. She plans to attend Indiana University East.

Jacob Curry received the Alumni, Lawrence Family and David L. & Carol F. Young Character Scholarship Award Scholarships. He will be attending Purdue University.

Mason Good received the UC Athletic Boosters, Alumni-In Honor of Coach Harry Allison, Lawrence Family and Kellie Stephen & Dave Furby Memorial Scholarships. He will be attending Marian University.

Baylie Hunt received the Stephen Family, Harry & June Loy and James Moorman Scholarships. She plans to attend Paul Mitchell Cosmetology.

Reagan Hoggatt received the Lady Indian Basketball, Randy Players, Class of 1983, Alumni, Lawrence Family, Kathy Harshman Leverenz, Wanda Mann, Doris Mendenhall Memorial, John D. Wilson and Martha Goodman Scholarships. She plans to attend DePauw University.

Antonio Jasso received the Class of 1983 and Kiwanis Club Scholarships. He will be attending Purdue Fort Wayne.

Peyton Jenkinson received National Honor Society “Make a Difference,” Melissa D. “Missy” Lee Memorial and Delta Theta Tau-Lambda Chapter. He plans to attend Ball State University.

Shelby King received the New Lisbon Christian Church and Class of 1983 Scholarships. She will be attending Purdue Fort Wayne.

Rachel New received the Harry & June Loy and American Legion Scholarships. She plans to attend Dental Assistant Technical School.

Sydney Ralston received the Sigma Phi Gamma, Alumni-In Memory of Bertie Teegarden, Lawrence Family, Jason Rickert Memorial, Duane E. & Ruby M. Wickersham Memorial, James Moorman and Lykins Family Foundation Entrepreneur Scholarships. She will be attending Purdue University.

Carmen Sigler received the Class of 1983 and James Moorman Scholarships. She plans to attend Vincennes University.

Sophia Spence received the Lady Indian Basketball, UC Athletic Boosters, PTO, John A. Smith Memorial, Alumni, Thomas E. Leahey Leadership Award, Tri Kappa and Claudia Wise Scholarships. She will be attending Ball State University.

Gavin Teeter received the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Class of 1970, Kathy Harshman Leverenz and VFW-Ron Moore Memorial Scholarships. He plans to attend Indiana State University.

Aliya Zimmers received the UC Athletic Boosters, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Class of 1983, Carl C. Keller & Virginia Whitman Keller and Rotary Club Citizenship Award Scholarships. She will be attending Ball State University.
