Versailles girls cross country team qualifies for regional meet

CLAYTON – The Versailles girls and Joe Spitzer qualified for the Division II regional cross country meet with their performances in the district meet on Saturday at Miami Valley Career Tech Center.

The Versailles girls finished fifth out of 17 teams in the Division II girls meet to earn one of six regional-qualifying spots along with Tippecanoe, Alter, Springfield Shawnee, Oakwood and Carroll.

Freshman Kara Spitzer led the Lady Tigers as she finished 12th overall with a time of 20:08.76. Also for Versailles, junior Brynna Blakeley finished 20th in 20:50.03, freshman Liz Watren finished 24th in 21:05.67, junior Hannah Rose finished 30th in 21:17.61, freshman Tori Schulze finished 31st in 21:17.61, sophomore Kenia McEldowney finished 37th in 21:37.20, and senior Madison Grilliot finished 46th in 22:16.83.

Alter senior Abby Nichols won the Division II girls race, which included 124 runners, with a time of 18:14.53.

Versailles’ Watren set the cutoff time for individual girls to qualify for regionals at 21:05.67 with her 24th place finish.

The Versailles boys finished seventh out of 23 teams in the Division II district meet, finishing one spot out of regional-qualifying position. Tippecanoe, Springfield Shawnee, Carroll, Eaton, Springfield Northwestern and Oakwood earned the team spots at regionals.

Sophomore Joe Spitzer led the Versailles boys and qualified for regionals by finishing seventh overall in 16:50.95. The rest of the Tigers finished their seasons with senior Jacob Rose finishing 50th in 18:11.39, junior Noah Pleiman finishing 52nd in 18:13.93, sophomore Adam Gehret finishing 72nd in 18:59.91, junior Jacob Wenig finishing 77th in 19:11.43, junior Nick Slonkosky finishing 84th in 19:20.86, and freshman Brooks Blakeley finishing 112th in 20:18.80.

Tippecanoe senior Mitchell Poynter won the Division II boys race, which included 160 runners, with a time of 16:07.81.

Brookville sophomore Jeremy Page set the cutoff time for qualifying for regionals at 17:24.88 as he finished 24th.

The Versailles girls and Joe Spitzer now advance to the regional meet on Oct. 31 in Troy. The girls will run at 11:45 a.m., and Joe Spitzer will run at 2:15 p.m. for a chance to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association state meet.
