Arcanum football team seeks to correct mistakes following scrimmage at Fort Loramie

FORT LORAMIE – Arcanum football coach TJ Powers was upset with his team’s mental mistakes in a seven-on-seven scrimmage Tuesday but is confident that the Trojans will be able to fix their problems.

Arcanum traveled to Fort Loramie on Tuesday for its first seven on seven of the 2016 season. The Trojans were far from polished as their coaches got on them for mental mistakes and a lack of intensity.

“I thought we came out of the gates slow tonight,” Powers said. “It was our first seven-on-seven competition. No excuse, though. Unfortunately I thought we kind of came out a little flat. We made some plays. Some good things and some bad things.”

Tuesday’s competition was just the fifth day of camp for the Trojans so they’re still early in the process of preparing for the upcoming season.

“Physical mistakes are going to happen but some of the mental mistakes … we just can’t have that,” Powers said. “That’s what I told the guys. That’s not us. It’s not acceptable. So we need to get that corrected.”

Some of the Trojans’ mistakes could be attributed to inexperience.

“We knew we were inexperienced in some spots that were exposed tonight,” Powers said. “We knew that that was going to happen.”

With the seven-on-seven scrimmage only allowing passing, it took a large portion of Arcanum’s playbook away. The Trojans are a run-first program on offense and expect they’ll be stronger when they can add that aspect to their game.

“We probably threw the ball more tonight than we’ll throw the ball all year,” Powers said. “It’s really good for our defense, though. We’re doing a few different things defensively that are less complicated, but again we have some young guys, some inexperienced guys. We’ve got a ton of good athletes so I’m confident we’ll get it.”

While there was a lot the Trojans have to improve on, Powers still saw some positive moments from his team.

“I was happy with the way we ended there defensively with a pick and a knock down,” he said. “We’ll build on the positives and coach up the negatives.”

Over the course of the next month Arcanum will use lessons from Tuesday’s scrimmage to get ready for the regular season.

“Everything that happened tonight is all coachable, coachable corrections,” Powers said. “It’s all mistakes that can be corrected and we will.”

Arcanum will host another seven-on-seven scrimmage Thursday morning.
