Versailles bowlers compete in Singles Tournament
The WOHSBC bowling season kicked off on Nov. 10 at Minster’s Community Lanes with a Singles Tournament. The boys’ field consisted of 49 bowers, nine of which were from Versailles. The tournament format included each bowler bowling two games and then cutting to the top 28 overall scores. Then the top 18 bowlers bowled one more game with the top four bowling head to head.
After two games, the Tigers had five bowlers make the top 18: Jordan Cordonnier, Sam Bensman, Jay Mumaw, Chad Shimp and Landon Henry. Cordonnier started his third game with seven strikes and ended with a score of 257. Although he entered that game in 10th place, he ended up jumping to second place overall. He then faced Matt Mesher from St. Henry in match play and started with a couple strikes. Cordonnier went on to mark every frame, but Mesher then struck four in a row before throwing a split in the 10th frame. In order to advance, Cordonnier needed to throw a strike ball. He threw a good ball, but only nine pins fell so he picked up his spare, threw one last strike and fell to Mesher, 195-194. Cordonnier then moved on to the consolation match and bowled against Derek Siefring from Coldwater. Siefring took the match, 254-149.
Overall finishing scores for the Tigers: Jordon Cordonnier 4th (142, 222, 257), Sam Bensman 6th (160, 186, 225), 7th Jay Mumaw (162, 199, 203), 15th Chad Shimp (139, 195, 185), 24th Landon Henry (144, 166, 155), 32nd Matthew Francis (148, 138), Tyler Gehret (131, 147), Drew Cotner (131, 126), and Alex Kunk (128, 108).
“I am proud of Jordan’s focus and success for the day. This is a good confidence builder,” VHS coach Tyler Phlipot said. “The first match is tough as the bowlers all have nerves but the boys all worked hard and improved throughout the day.”
The Tigers will be back in action at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 against Marion Local at Plaza Lanes in Celina.
Lady Tigers impressive at Singles Tournament
The Versailles girls also kicked of the WOHSBC bowling season in the Singles Tournament at Minster’s Community Lanes. The field consisted of 34 bowers, nine of which were Lady Tigers. The tournament format was the same as the boys with each bowler bowling two games and then cutting to the top 18 overall scores. Then, the top 18 bowlers bowled one more game with the top 4 bowling head to head. Morgan Barlage led qualifying after two games with scores of 205 and 205. Also making the top 18 were Haddi Treon, Morgan Heitkamp, Lindsay Cheadle, Natalie York and Mallory York.
After bowling a third game, Barlage still led qualifying and was the No. 1 seed. Elena Bulcher from Ft Loramie was the second seed, Lauren Wenning from Coldwater was the third seed and the fourth seed was Tiger bowler Haddi Treon.
The two Lady Tigers faced each other in the semifinals with Barlage coming away with the victory, 206-192.
“This was a good match where the girls had a chance to push each other,” VHS coach Tyler Phlipot said.
Barlage moved on to the championship match bowling against Bulcher, while Treon went against Wenning in the consolation match. Bulcher out bowled Barlage for the championship, 234-161. Treon fought hard, but fell to Wenning 174-108 in the consolation match. “The lanes changed, and we struggled to get Haddi lined up,” Phlipot said. “She never gave up trying. I am very happy with the way the girls bowled today.”
Overall the Tiger finishers were: 2nd Morgan Barlage (205, 205, 170), 4th Haddi Treon (169, 203, 173), 7th Lindsay Cheadle (174, 167, 156), 10th Morgan Hietkamp (150, 159, 157), 16th Natalie York 157, 134, 148), 18th Mallory York (157, 131, 102), Kalysta Thobe (136, 133), Jena Mangen (125, 120) and Madelynn Stewart (115, 128).
The Lady Tigers will be in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 17 against Marion Local at Plaza Lanes in Celina.
Edison State falls to Wright-Patt AFB
Edison State women’s basketball team dropped a tough non- league game at home to Wright-Patt AFB 59-56 last Friday night.
Lauryn Gray of Piqua had a great game leading the team with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Mikayla Dodane from Mechanicsburg had 11 points and Sarah Pothast of Wapakoneta tallied 10. Clair Schmitmeyer of Versailles pulled down 12 rebounds.
Greenville Elks to host Hoop Shoot contest Nov. 25
The Greenville Elks Lodge #1139 will host the local competition of the National Elks Hoop Shoot Competition at 1 p.m. on Nov. 25 at the Greenville High School.
The competition is free and open to all participants in Darke County. Registration will open at Noon with competition beginning at 1 p.m. The Elks National Hoop Shoot is free throw contest for youth ages 8-13.
Beginning at a local Elks Lodge, winning contestants advance through district, state, regional and national competitions. The program is free to all contestants. The Elks help sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition.
One boy and one girl from each division will compete for a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Contestants will compete in one of three age groups: Ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Contestants age as of April 1, 2019 will determine which age group they compete in. Contestants must be 8 years old by April 1, 2019 to compete.
