CCC track & field championship begins

WEST ALEXANDRIA – Although the first day of the Cross County Conference (CCC) Track & Field Championship is generally regarded as qualifying day, there were some champions named in the field events and 4x800m relay. Several Darke County athletes won their events or qualified for the finals on Friday.

In girls discus throw, it was Miami East’s Rachel Ondera taking the championship with a 132’ 9” throw and setting a new CCC meet record. Covington’s Lauren Christian finished second. Morgan Best and Trista Hollinger, of Arcanum, finished third and fourth. Tori Wickham, of Ansonia, and Maddie Bennett, Tri-Village, finished in the top eight at seventh and eighth.

Covington took the top two spots in girls high jump with Lillian Hamilton finishing first at 5’. Kayla Mitchel tied for second with Meredith Butsch, Tri-Village, at 4’ 10”. Tri-Village’s Maria Petry finished fourth. Arcanum’s Audrey Heiser tied for fifth with Liza Bair of Miami East.

Travis Hunt, of National Trail, was crowned champion in boys long jump with a 21’ 4.5” leap. Rounding out the top eight were Ethan Cook, Newton; Justin Brown, Miami East; Kadin Presser, Covington; Jacob Ray, National Trail; William Bowman, Twin Valley South (TVS); Brennan Troutwine, Arcanum; and Josh Ecklebarger, Newton.

Newton’s sophomore standout Dawson Hildebrand finished first in shot put with a throw of 56’ 4.5”. The next closest throw was from Dillon Howard, TVS, at 42’ 10”. Finishing in third through eighth were Ryan Teale, Miami East; Sam Pritchard, Covington; Brendan Dalton, Miami East; Ben Combs, TVS; Jacob McQuinn, Bradford; and Paul Rammel, Arcanum.

Matthew Shook and Brock Shellhaas, of Ansonia, finished first and second in boys pole vault. Shook won with a vault of 14’ 6”. Blaine Brokschmidt, of Miami East, tied with Shellhaas for second at 14’. Top finishers also included Kyle Saul and Matthew Cornett, TVS; Griffin Cates, Arcanum; Trace Lavy, Newton; and Hunter Pahl, Tri-County North (TCN).

In the Girls 4x800m Relay, Miami East was the top team finishing the 3200 meter race in 10:52.65. Bethel finished second with TVS, Newton, Arcanum, Franklin Monroe, Ansonia and TCN rounding out the top eight.

In the Boys 4x800m Relay, TVS earned the top spot with a time of 8:31.70. Second through eighth were Miami East, Arcanum, Covington, Bethel, Newton and National Trail.
